Virginia Davis (1918-2009)

  1. Margie Gray, Alice Solves The Puzzle, 1925.  Virginia was Walt Disney’s first star – the seven-year-old the live-action lead of the Alice’s Wonderland toon, shot at her Kansas City home. in 1922.. She made 14 more of Alice’s adventures, before being replaced by Gray when her showbiz Momma (she’d moved the family to Hollywood) wanted more money. In all Disney made 57 Alice shorts. Gray was in 31, Lois Hardwick ten and just one for Dawn O’Day. “We'd film in a vacant lot,” recalled Virginia. “Walt would drape a white tarpaulin over the back of a billboard and along the ground, and I'd have to work in pantomime. They’d add the animation around me later. It was such fun. Kids in the neighborhood would act as extras, and Walt paid them 50 cents apiece.“
  2. Adriana Caselotti, Snow White and the Severn Dwarfs, 1936. “Walt never had any ill feelings toward me.,” said Davis about her Alice divorce.  “I could still continue to go out and see him. I always had entrée to his office.” She auditioned as Snow White’s voice, but once again, Momma wanted a better salary. “We continued to be friends and after [Snow White] he gave me a job. He taught me how to ink and paint and I also did some [uncredited]voices for a while.” (In Pinocchio, for example). “To be part of all that majesty and animation history is just heartwarming for me and I really feel privileged to have been part of it.“  She made 15 other movies and one of her directors Curt Rehfield said during The Greater Glory, she had the disposition of an angel.
