Shelley Duvall

  1. Louisa Moritz, One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest, 1974.
  2. Marya Small, One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest, 1974.
  3. Pam Dawbar, A Wedding, 1977.      Boyfriend Paul Simon would not let Duvall go to the Chicago shoot… because he had already paid rent on a Hamptons house for their summer! She had a four minute conversation with Robert Atman and refused to join his double-Nashville total 48 characters. Dysfunctional, every last one. Like the over-reaching movie. His fifth flop at Fox… the home of M*A*S*H. Sad.
  4. Marta Heflin, A Perfect Couple, 1978.     When Robert Altman had to replace Sandy Dennis, the 1968 star of his That Cold Day In The Park, because the five cats she brought to readings led to the hospitalisation of his allergic star Paul Dooley, Altman tried to win Duvall back into his fold. “But she’s got some other stupid job.” (The Shining!). Bob didn’t like it that much when his “family” worked with other directors. They made up in time for Popeye - for there was no other Olive Oil in all of Hollywood!
  5. Blair Brown, One Trick Pony, 1979.    Singer Paul Simon wrote the film for himself and his lover -  but he split up with Duvall  at the airport as she left for The Shining in London. Charming!
  6. Uma Thurman, Even Cowgirls Get The Blues, 1992.     The only USA actress to work with Woody Allen, Robert Altman and Stanley Kubrick, Duvall bought the rights to Tom Robbins’ 1976 book, signed a 1980 Warner Bros deal  to write and star as Sissy Hankshaw of the enormous thumbs (great for hitching throuigh the US). After four years of going nowhere, she gave up her dream role and moved on. Another ten years pass and  Tri-Star sign  Gus Van Sant -  and k.d. lang's soundtrack album sold better!
