Eve Arden (1908-1990)

  1. Lee Patrick, The Maltese Falcon, 1940.   Once Bogart and Mary Astor slipped into place, the casting was easy - although Arden was unavailable for Sam Spade’s secretary, Effie. (“You're a good man, sister,”  Sam Spade tells her). Patrick took over, passing the widow Iva Archer  to Gladys George.
  2. Angela Lansbury, The Harvey Girls, 1945.   The birds are waitresses at the famous 1880s’ Fred Harvey restaurant chain. (MGM accepted any excuse for a Judy Garland musical). Arden, Lucille Ball, Ann Sothern, Ann Lana Turner  had the good fortune to  lose Em - which had poor Lansbury hissed at by the public for being the rival (on-screen) of everyone’s sweetheart.  Judy Garland.
  3. Zoe Caldwell, The Purple Rose of Cairo, 1984.   Arden was Woody Allen’s favorite comedy actress (sorry about that, Diane, Mia, Scarlett, Emma) he had hoped she could be The Duchess in his film within his film in his deliciously audacious comic triumph.   Alas, she was tending her dying  husband Brooks West.
