Ray Middleton (1907-1984)

  1. Robert Strauss, The Man With The Golden Arm, 1955.    Buying the rights from John Garfield’s estate, producer-director Otto Preminger defied the Production Code and made a film not only daring to mention the word “drugs” but dealing with addiction. He was reportedly torn between two Rays  - Burr and Middleton -  for Zero Schwiefka, boss of Frank Sinatra’s heroin-addled card dealer. Then, apparently, Billy Wilder had a word with his fellow Austrian about how good Strauss was in  his Stalag 17 and The Seven Year Itch.
