Faye Marlowe

  1. Jeanne Crain, Leave Her To Heaven, 1945.      A real pulp soap opera…   despite its Shakesperean title. (Via Hamlet). The Hollywood Reporter said that the unknown Marlowe was “penciled in for the role of the good sister.” Well, she was rubbed out - same as Ida Lupino- , leaving us with what New York Times critic Bosley Crowther called the “colourless and wooden” Crain.  Marlowe made seven movies before she was done with Hollywood. Or, vice-versa.
  2. Fay McKenzie, Down Mexico Way, 1940. In the mix – but not the saddle – for joining Gene Autry and his harmonica- playing pardner, Frog (Smiley Burnette), chasing the bad guys from Sage City into Mexico…. then stopping for a song.  No better, no worse than Carolina Moo nor Rancho Grande, Autry’s oaters  were rather like the UK's  Carry On farces: same story, different titles.
