- Lilian Gish, Night Of The Hunter, 1954. For his one and only - and classic - directing gig, Charles Laughton was spoilt for choice for guardian angel Rachel Cooper. He saw Gish, Fazenda, Ethel Barrymore, Jane Darwell, Helen Hayes, Agnes Moorehead and, of course, his wife, Elsa Lanchester. After he married her, Hollywood loved to call producer Hal Wallis: The Prisoner of Fazenda. They proved LA wrong with Film City’s most stable marriage, from 1927 to her death.
