Ivan Mosjoukine (1889-1939)

  1. Albert Dieudonné, Napoleon,  France, 1926.  It’s still far and away the definitive Bonaparte movie. The visionary writer-director Abel Gance wanted the Russian star as the dictator  but Mosjoukine told him: “Only a Frenchman can play Napoleon.” Better still, a Corsican.  Besides, Hollywood was getting interested in the Russian Valentino, but only as a co-star and then, the  talkies killed him. He did not speak English.
