Bernard Hepton

  1. Dudley Jones, Doctor Who #29: The Tenth Planet, TV, 1966.      Now here’s something new...   Hepton missed being Dyson in Doc1 William Hartnell’s final show for none- of the usual reasons  refusing or too busy. But because after some re-writing, producer Innes Lloyd felt Dyson was no longer worthy of such an accomplished actor. (No one reported what Jones felt about that statement). Sadly this episode is lost and so, therefore, is the historic sequence of Doc1 William Hartnell regenerating into Doc2 Patrick Troughton. Oh, woe for Who!
  2. George Baker, Doctor Who #111: Full Circle, TV, 1980.     The baker’s dozen actors up for Login were familiar names from 80s Whoverse casting register. Hepton, Baker, Joss Ackland, Brian Blessed, John Carson, James Ellis, Frank Finlay, Donald Houston, Jeremy Kemp, William Lucas, Alfred Lynch, TP McKenna, Edward Woodward. And they stayed listed until they became available. Some, never did…
  3. Paul Jerricho, Doctor Who #123: Arc of Infinity, TV, 1983.       Hepton, Sean Arnold and future Doc 6 Colin Baker were up for The Castellan opposite Doc5 Peter Davison. Despite nearly 100 screen roles, Hepton never Whoved. Far too occupied with Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, Smiley’s People, I, Claudius and playing Archbishop Thomas Cranmer three times.
  4. Patrick Stewart, Lifeforce, 1984.
  5. Michael Gothard, Lifeforce, 1984.
  6. Aubrey Morris, Lifeforce, 1984.
  7. Frank Finlay, Lifeforce, 1984.
  8. Laurence Payne, Doctor Who #140: The Two Doctors, TV, 1985.       Director Peter Moffatt shuffled 16 candidates for the dastardly Dastari, genetically experimenting on the Androgum race. Hepton, Joss Ackland, Bernard Archard, George Baker, James Bree, Michael Craig, Peter Cushing, Anton Diffring, Neil Hallett, Peter Jeffrey, Freddie Jones, Jeremy Kemp, Clifford Rose, Nigel Stock, John Woodnutt. The semi-retired Payne won and joined the two (?) Time Lords, Doc2 Patrick Troughton and Doc 6, the short lived Colin Baker for the last of the Sontarans… until they bothered Doc10 David Tennant some 23 years later in #192a: The Sontaran Stratagem, 2008.
