John McIntire (1907-1991)

  1. Alan Napier, Macbeth, 1947.   After Jeannette Nolan won her screen debut as Mac’s Lady, director Orson Welles booked her husband for A Holy Father.   However, the English tones of Batman’s TV butler (1966-1968) were more Shakespearean than Mac’s crusty voice just  made for all his Westerns.
  2. Charles Watts, Giant, 1955.
  3. Dean Jagger, King Creole, 1957.   Fretting about the cost of Jagger as Elvis Presley’s father (er...!), producer Hal B Wallis ran the names of two other veterans,  Blackmer and John McIntire, up the proverbial flagpoles – before deciding to shut up and pay up.
