Pierre Etaix (1928-2016)

  1. Michel Crémadès, Micmacs à tire-larigot, France, 2009.   Auteur Jean-Pierre Jeunet wanted then veteran mime and movie-maker to play Petit Pierre but the “young man of 80, full of energy” only had time to be l'inventeur des histoires drôles - inventor of funny stories.
  2. “Jacques Tati,” The Illusionist, France, 2009.    Once upon a time, French-actor-director Jacques Tati (Les vacances de M Hulot, 1953) was due to shoot his script with fellow mime Etaix in the title role. However, they fell out and never spoke again. (Not difficult for two mime artists). French ‘toon creator, Sylvain Chomet, won the rights for his follow-up to his international animation hit, Les Triplets de Belleville, 2003. Chomet’s drew his titular magician with the Tati look and - suitably - sans dialogue. Apart from mumbled French and an incomprehensible Scottish dialect.
