- Hugh Herbert, One Touch of Venus, 1947. Hollywood icon Mary Pickford snapped up the musical’s rights - for Broadway icon, Mary Martin, with Bert Lahr, Frank Sinatra and Clifton Webb. Then, Martin fell pregnant and Pickford sold it, even more rapidly, to MGM... which saw it as a vehicle for Ava Gardner. Herbert (a veritable Lahr clone) was totally absent in the final cut.
