- Edgar Barrier, Phantom of the Opera, 1943. Universal first planned to send up the re-tread of Lon Chaney's 1925 hit, with Abbott & Costello as the rivals (with The Phantom) for soprano Susanna Foster.
- Hugh O'Brien, Fireman Save My Child, 1954. The duo started shooting (and can still be seen in long shots) until Lou Costello's health forced them to quit. Universal's bizarre replacements? Buddy Hackett and Hugh O'Brien! Not the same thing at all.
