Esmond Knight (1906-1987)

  1. Eric Portman, 49th Parallel, 1941.       Absent.   Knight had enlisted in the Royal Navy at the outbreak of war and  lost an eye and was almost totally blinded in the other during an engagement against The Bismark. The actor  told UK  director Michael Powell that while wallowing around on the floor of his gun turret in blood and guts and oil, he heartily regretted not accepting the 49th role of  Lieutenant Hirth!  He refused to let a lost eye interfere with his career of 148 screen roles, the majority of which  happened after the war.  Including playing his own captain of the HMS Prince of Wales in Powell’s masterly restaging  of the battle to Sink the Bismarck! 1959.
  2. Edward Underdown, Doctor Who #110: Meglos, TV, 1980.       Second John Nathan-Taylor production of his eclectic and scandal-ridden  80s had veterans Denham, Esmond Knight and Ralph Michael in contention for Zastor opposite Doc4 Tom Baker on the forest planet Tygella. (Where else?)
