Marthe was due to be Fedora the mother and Fedora  the daughter  until  a  bad  car accident smashed her face.  "It was all fixed up,"  said  director Billy Wilder, "but the nerve ends are such that she could not tolerate the pain when taking off heavy rubber make-up for the mother." So she simply played the daughter.
